How to Check Automatic Transmission not Shifting

Model: Hyundai Sonata (YF)

Year Model: 2011

Fuel: Gasoline

Displacement: 2400cc

Subject: Automatic Transmission Shock Shifting.

1) Condition

  1. Engine not Cranking Totally Power Block out
  2. Automatic Transmission cannot shift to ‘R’ ,’N’ & ‘D’.

2) Cause

  1. Engine not cranking totally power block out due to Alternator main fuse busted  cause of battery electric current drain.
  2. Automatic transmission cannot shift due to shift lock solenoid not functioning.

3) Diagnosis

  1. Recharge battery and visually check all fuses = the main fuse from alternator confirm busted = Replace new fuse.
  2. Start the engine and confirm the battery voltage by using GDS or Voltmeter( at the same time i use GDS).
  3. Check all the system, lights and gear = confirm the automatic transmission cannot shift.due to shift lock solenoid not working.
  4. Check with schematic diagram for shift lock solenoid.
    = From the brake switch check for the power
    disconnect the socket and check, Switch on the key = Ok (B+) 
    = Check the switch = OK
    = Pull out the console box assembly where in the shifting lever mounting under it.
    = Check the wire connector of shift solenoid.
    =Disconnect the socket and check if there is power from brake switch and ground from ECU = Ok
    = Direct with power and ground the solenoid wire to check if this will functioning = No, confirm that solenoid busted.

4) Repair Guide

  1. Replace alternator main fuse.
  2. Replace shift lock solenoid.
