2011  G 1.6 GDI  Emission Control System

Study Guide and Description

Study Emissions Control System consists of three major systems.

Study The Crankcase Emission Control System prevents blow-by gas from releasing into the atmosphere. This system recycles gas back into the intake manifold (Closed Crankcase Ventilation Type).

Study The Evaporative Emission Control System prevents evaporative gas from releasing into the atmosphere. This system burns gas at appropriate engine operating condition after gathering it in the canister.

Study The Exhaust Emission Control System converts the three pollutants [hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx)] into harmless substances by using the 3-way catalytic converter.

How to repair if engine sometimes poor acceleration and Hesitate during acceleration.

How to repair if engine sometimes poor acceleration and hesitate during acceleration.

Model: Hyundai Tucson/Ix35/Lm,El.

Year Mode: 2010

Fuel: Gasoline

Displacement: 2000cc

Subject:

  • Engine sometimes poor acceleration and hesitate during acceleration

Cause:

  • Due to MAP Sensor

Diagnosis:

  • Scan tool Check
    =P0106 Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit Range/Performance

Component Location

General Description

Study The amount of intake air flow must be inputted to PCM in order to determine the fuel injection quantity.Study MAPS(Manifold Absolute Pressure) calculates the amount of air indirectly by measuring the pressure inside of intake manifold. Study This mechanism is also called Speed-Density Type. MAPS transfers analog output signal which is proportional to the change of intake manifold pressure, then, with this signal and RPM, PCM calculates the amount of intake air flow. Study MAPS is mounted on surge tank to measure the pressure inside of intake manifold, and it consists of a piezo electric element and hybrid IC which amplifies output signal from the element. Study A piezo electric element is a sort of a diaphragm using piezo electric effect. One side of the diaphragm is surrounded with vacuum chamber while intake pressure is applied to the other side.Study Thus, signals are outputted by the transformation of diagphragm according to the change of pressure inside of intake manifold.

Study DTC Description

Study PCM compares the MAPS output and calculated MAPS value while enable condition is met. If the acutal MAP value is higher than Maximum threshold or lower than Minimum threshold for a pre-determined time, PCM determines that a fault exists and a DTC is stored.

DTC Detecting Condition

Item
Detecting Condition
Possible Cause

• Dirty air cleaner

• Oil Cap or Dipstick missing or not installed correctly.

• Air leak in intake system

• Contact resistance in connectors.

• Faulty MAPS or TPS

Study Signal Waveform & Data

As often as possible, the MAPS signal should be compared with the TPS signal. Check whether the MAPS and TPS signals increase at the same time when accelerating. During acceleration, the MAPS output voltage increases; during deceleration, the MAPS output voltage decreases.

Replace Parts:

  • Replace MAP sensor.

Subject: Check engine light on at the same time no acceleration

2010  G 2.4 DOHC  Engine  Unleaded GEN  P0121 Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch \'A\' Circuit Range/Performance

Study Component Location

Study General Description

Study The Electronic Throttle Control(ETC) system consists of the throttle body, Throttle Position Sensor(TPS) 1&2 and Accelerator Position Sensor(APS) 1&2. TPS1&2 are sharing the same source voltage and ground. Study The throttle valve opening is control by throttle motor which is controlled by Engine Control Module(PCM).Study The opposite position indicator shows inverted signal characteristics. TPS1 output voltage increases smoothly in proportion with the throttle valve opening angle after starting. TPS2 output voltage decreases in inverse proportion with the throttle valve opening angle after starting. StudyTPS provides feedback to the PCM to control the throttle motor in order to control the throttle valve opening angle properly in response to the driving condition.

Study DTC Description

Study The DTC P0121 is set when the intake manifold model filtered reduced area controller is out of range in low or high load.

Study DTC Strategy

• Plausibility check between TPS1 and TPS2

• Faulty TPS1

• Poor connection or damaged harness

Enable Conditions

• No engine stop and engine start

• No TPS adaptation request

• No relevant failure

Threshold Value

• An absolute value of TPS2 - TPS1 > 7.6%

Diagnostic Time

Study Forced limited power mode : When the DTC is set, the PCM reduces engine torque by 25% of normal value.

Study The PCM uses TPS2 signal to monitor the controlled opening angle of the throttle valve.

Terminal and Connection Inspection

1.Many malfunctions in the electrical system are caused by poor harness(es) and terminals. Faults can also be caused by interference from other electrical systems, and mechanical or chemical damage.

2.Thoroughly check connectors for looseness, poor connection, bending, corrosion, contamination, deterioration, or damage.

3.Has a problem been found?

Study Repair as necessary and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.

Study Go to "Component Inspection" procedure.

Component Inspection

1.Study Select 'Actuation Test' mode and execute 'ETC motor' item.

Study During 'ETC Motor' test, TPS1 and TPS2 show symmetrical movements.

2.Is the waveform normal?

Study Check for poor connection between PCM and component: backed out terminal, improper mating, broken locks or poor terminal to wire connection. Repair as necessary and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.

Study Check ETC for contamination, deterioration, or damage. Substitute with a known-good ETC and check for proper operation. If the problem is corrected, replace TPS and then go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.

It is necessary to perform the TPS adaptation procedure after the ETC assembly or PCM replacing.

Study TPS adaptation procedure

Ignition "OFF" and then "ON" without cranking. Wait for 10 seconds under enable conditions.

→ Enable conditions : Battery >10V & Intake Air Temp. >5.3°C(41.5°F) & 5.3°C(41.5°F) <Engine CoolantTemp. <99.8°C(211.6°F)
